Questionnaire Responses

Patrick "Mac" McAtee-MacRae

We reached out to just about every candidate that we ranked with a questionnaire specific to the office they are running for. Here are the answers Mr. "Mac" McAtee-MacRae provided.

Mr. "Mac" McAtee-MacRae is a non-partisan. He's running to represent Nevada's 1st Assembly District.

Tell us about your background. What are your qualifications for this position?

I am a 31-year U.S. Navy Veteran, retired with the Rank of CWO5, I hold a master’s in teaching, several certifications in Configuration Management and Quality Assurance. To be a legislator these days, the ability to work for the good of the voters, regardless of others political association in important. I am a nonpartisan candidate; I have no political agenda other than representing the 1st assembly district. Therefor, I have no political party to support or follow! I have a proven track record of working with others and achieving results.

Do you agree or disagree with the measures taken by state officials in response to the COVID-19 pandemic? What do you think should have been done or done differently?

The State of Nevada’s actions up until forcing the choice of getting a shot or loosing your job was decent. Not perfect, but decent. Making someone choose between losing their livelihood, their religion, or their medical condition to put food on the table is WRONG!

Many voters are unhappy with our public school system. What policies or actions would you prescribe to repair or replace the existing system? Do you support “school choice” policies such as educational savings accounts? Why or why not?

The voters should be unhappy with the public school system. Nevada ranks at the bottom of the list for quality education. More money is not the complete answer! Fixing the education system will take many different ideas and actions to fix. There is no one quick answer. Incentive to improve and remove political ideology from schools are one of the first steps. I like having the money follow the student. You would quickly see improvements. It will not solve all the issues. It will take a tremendous amount of time and energy to resolve home life issues, access to food if needed, and mental resources for those that need help.

Please briefly describe your political philosophy. What are your guiding principles?

As a nonpartisan candidate hearing district 1 voters, being willing to accept good ideas from any source, regardless of which side of the aisle it may come from. It is not my job to legislate morality, religious choices, or individual beliefs. Most of all remembering who my Boss is! District 1 Voters!

Many voters are concerned about inflation and its impact. What could be done at the state or national level to address the root causes of inflation or mitigate its impact on the public?

As a state legislator, the ability to fix, solve or reduce inflation is limited to items the state controls. So, National level resolutions will be limited. Reducing or eliminating the gas tax will only hurt Nevadans down the road. I would, given todays environment be opposed to any new taxes, State or Federal.

What would be your top priorities in the Nevada state legislature?

Please see the above question on Political Philosophy. It is too easy to say “Education, Inflation and veteran’s issues” Those would be my priorities, but I am not going to Carson City to represent my views. I am going to work those issues important to the voters of the 1st assembly district.

Who or what are the largest political special interests in Nevada, and which of these do you see as having a positive or negative influence?

I love Nevada! Every state and every nation have large political special interests. Calling them out here or in any public venue is counterproductive to my beliefs as a nonpartisan. We need those willing to work together. If it improves the lives of those in the 1st assembly district, I WILL work it!
