Questionnaire Responses

Jim Marchant

We reached out to just about every candidate that we ranked with a questionnaire specific to the office they are running for. Here are the answers Mr. Marchant provided.

Mr. Marchant is a Republican. He's running to be Nevada's next Secretary of State.

Tell us about your background. What are your qualifications for this position?

I have been a leader and innovator in the computer software, Internet, and telecommunication industries beginning in 1984. I’ve served as CEO and President of three successful technology companies.

As a businessman, I was tired of the government punishing job creators so I decided to take matters into my own hands, I ran and defeated a tax-raising moderate/liberal Republican in the Nevada Assembly District 37 in 2016. While in the Nevada Assembly, he fought against the Establishment in both parties for lower taxes, less burdensome regulations, gun rights, and a more transparent government. I was ranked the top conservative legislator by conservative groups such as American Conservative Union and Nevada Policy Research Institute.

Do you agree or disagree with the measures taken by state officials in response to the COVID-19 pandemic? What do you think should have been done or done differently?

I completely disagree with the measures taken by state officials in Nevada and the rest of this country. The masks, lockdowns, social distancing requirements, and everything else made us worse off in the long run. Failures of leadership during and after COVID have resulted in a recession.

Many voters are unhappy with our public school system. What policies or actions would you prescribe to repair or replace the existing system? Do you support “school choice” policies such as educational savings accounts? Why or why not?

I support school choice. Competition is the lifeblood of our economy. It keeps businesses innovative and customer-focused. It’s also the best way to expose problems in a system. Public schooling has allowed educators and administrators to take a vacation from reality. With massively failing test scores and low graduation rates, it’s time for that vacation to end.

Please briefly describe your political philosophy. What are your guiding principles?

I’m a classic Nevada conservative. Businesses, families, and individuals deserve to live their lives without the government hanging over them. I’ll fight with everything I’ve got to make sure that happens.

Many voters are concerned about inflation and its impact. What could be done at the state or national level to address the root causes of inflation or mitigate its impact on the public?

The answer is simple- stop printing money, stop spending money we don’t have and unleash the productive and creative potential of the American people. Especially in energy and food production.

As Secretary of State, I will make it easier than ever for you to open your business by slashing filing fees and simplifying the business registration process. I want to make it as easy for you as it was for me to fill out this questionnaire.

Many voters are concerned about the integrity of our elections. What are your thoughts on this issue and what actions would you take to address these concerns

There are significant irregularities in our system that have to be addressed immediately to restore confidence in our election results. After a thorough state audit on election practices I will make it easier to vote and harder to cheat by:

  1. Bring voter ID to Nevada for in-person and absentee voting.
  2. Cleaning our voter rolls.
  3. Making the vote counting process more transparent than it's ever been.]

And that’s just the beginning.

Why did you run for Secretary of State? What do you hope to accomplish if elected?

The same reason I started running for office to begin with. I’m a businessman with a heart for the private sector and a heart for the American people. I can’t sit on the sidelines when there is something I can do to clean up this mess.

I will make Nevada an example for other states to follow by:

  • Ensuring we have Fair and Transparent Elections
  • Starting Voter ID Now
  • Slashing Business Filing Fees
  • Reducing Filings Required by Business Owners
  • Cutting the Red Tape for Private Charities so they can provide quality relief to those in need.
