Questionnaire Responses

Colleen Westlake

We reached out to just about every candidate that we ranked with a questionnaire specific to the office they are running for. Here are the answers Ms. Westlake provided.

Ms. Westlake is a non-partisan. She's running to represent District B on the Washoe County School Board.

Tell us about your background. What are your qualifications for this position?

I have past board experience, over 10 years of service on a youth football board! I interacted with other board members, players, cheerleaders, parents, high school administrators, athletic directors, principals and city parks administrators.

Do you agree or disagree with the measures taken by state officials in response to the COVID-19 pandemic? What do you think should have been done or done differently?

I am definitely in disagreement! We can now see the damage caused to our children with masking, lockdowns and distance learning! NONE OF THE ABOVE WAS NECESSARY OR WORKED! I think taking temperatures is a good idea and if you have any illness symptoms…stay home!

Many voters are unhappy with our public school system. What policies or actions would you prescribe to repair or replace the existing system? Do you support “school choice” policies such as educational savings accounts? Why or why not?

I would begin by getting back to basic curriculum, no SEL, Social Emotional Learning! No Restorative Discipline policy but instead metered consequences for unacceptable behavior. Required parent involvement. I am for Parental Choice in all matters concerning their children. Parents should be allowed to decide where their child receives an education in line with their values and ideology and the money spent per child by the state should follow the child!

Please briefly describe your political philosophy. What are your guiding principles?

I am a conservative who respects the constitution of the United States! I believe in equality not equity unless it is equity I am gaining in my home purchase. Diversity is not something you can create in society it is a natural happening occurring daily with cultures coming together. Treat everyone with respect, dignity and kindness which should be earned. My guiding principals are treat others how you want to be treated, work your hardest and apply yourself 100% even if no one is watching and be involved with your family and community.

Many voters are concerned about inflation and its impact. What could be done at the state or national level to address the root causes of inflation or mitigate its impact on the public?

We need to be fiscally responsible and stop spending money we don’t have.

What are the biggest issues facing Washoe County schools, and how would you address them?

Low performance levels can be addressed if we would concentrate on basic curriculum and insist on the grade given is the grade earned. No lowering of the bar! Absenteeism should require parents be held responsible for in-attendance. Also if we get kids passionate about learning instead of dwelling on all of this self absorption they may find their way back. Drug and alcohol abuse and violence has a zero tolerance acceptance and consequences will be implemented.

Some parents are concerned about “mission creep” in education. How should teachers handle topics like race, sex, gender, and identity in the classroom?

Back to basics and the teaching of curriculum not social and political platforms. Too much time us being spent on topics that have nothing to do with basic education it is pandering to a very small majority. Too much bias and prejudice is involved when these topics are addressed in a classroom and it is not appropriate for younger children to be exposed to this adult content.
