Questionnaire Responses

Melanie Sutton

We reached out to just about every candidate that we ranked with a questionnaire specific to the office they are running for. Here are the answers Ms. Sutton provided.

Ms. Sutton is a non-partisan. She's running to represent District C on the Washoe County School Board.

Tell us about your background. What are your qualifications for this position?

I have been a stay at home mom for about 12 years. I began homeschooling my 3 children 3 years ago because I did not agree with the mandates and the government intrusion. Prior to being a stay at home mom I was a Senior CPHT. We also have a small farm.

Do you agree or disagree with the measures taken by state officials in response to the COVID-19 pandemic? What do you think should have been done or done differently?

I have been fighting this tyranny since it started. Went to every county commissioner and school board meeting for 2 years. I told Bob Lucey two years ago I would to everything I could to get him out of office which we succeeded. I believe in freedom, and we have a god given right to our freedoms. I will never trust any government or doctor after what has happened.

Many voters are unhappy with our public school system. What policies or actions would you prescribe to repair or replace the existing system? Do you support “school choice” policies such as educational savings accounts? Why or why not?

I support Parental Choice! I am sick of them forcing their politics and views on us. The only purpose for our schools is to educate and train our kids to be successful adults. Our schools are failing our children. Out of all the meetings I have been to in the last two years they only discussed the education of our children once.

Please briefly describe your political philosophy. What are your guiding principles?

I always say I am a Constitutional Conservative Libertarian. Stay out of my life and I will stay out of yours.

Many voters are concerned about inflation and its impact. What could be done at the state or national level to address the root causes of inflation or mitigate its impact on the public?

Energy independence and stop all this government spending. It is pretty easy to see what caused this.

What are the biggest issues facing Washoe County schools, and how would you address them?

The failing academics and social issues they are forcing on us. The current Trustees don't care about our children or the families in our county. They only care about the unions and their future political ambitions.

Some parents are concerned about “mission creep” in education. How should teachers handle topics like race, sex, gender, and identity in the classroom?

Teachers I know that don't agree with this are scared to speak out. The only thing I can think of is give us the information so we can inform the people what is going on and to help get us elected so we can protect them and get rid of this.
